Apache grew up in Philadelphia, Pa. Early on, his attraction to rock'n'roll was kindled by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, but it was the sounds of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience that led him to quit school altogether. A five-year stint with the Philly funk group Duck Soup yielded a couple singles and opening slots on East coast tours with the likes of Hall and Oates and Little Feat. After moving west, he spent three years with blues and soul legend Etta James. "I'll always be grateful for the time I spent with Etta. We opened for the Stones, played the Monterey Jazz Festival, gigged with the Meters and the Blues Brothers Band, Mardi Gras in New Orleans; it was sensational!" In the wake of Guns'n'Roses, tattooed hard-rock bands were back on top in the early 90's, and Little Caesar was prominent among them. Apache contributed guitars and slide guitars to Caesar releases on both the Metal Blade and Geffen labels, as the band toured with some top acts and flirted with the big time. Fuzzbox Piranha
Halfway between the capitol of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore lay the city of Denton, MD. Tucked into the side of a heavily wooded rolling hill stands the “Piranha Lounge”. One hundred feet below the last foliage of the tall tree tops it sits…in stillness, where swamp meets pine, where old meets new, where memories are melted down and re-forged into new musical experiences.
The Piranha Lounge, home to Fuzzbox Piranha, rare breed of musical fish. The Piranha Lounge; four walls, a barn door, and an air conditioner stuck in the wall. A tube amp ‘cooking’ in the corner…rusted beer signs on the walls… a paint-splattered 5-piece…and…a full size fridge filled with offerings of local breweries. This is the ‘crank tank’, and all is quiet now…until Dale’s key slides into the lock. Three walk in, switches are flipped, a cold one is cracked, and they star to play. And just like a pot of freshly caught Blue Claws, it boils over soon enough.
Syrupy strains of Zepplin-esque vocals reach as high as the tall white pines. Drums and bass, borne somewhere deeper…darker…thump the night. And a soap bar-loaded Brazen guitar with all the crunch of a fried soft-shell crab sandwich, shakes the 50 year old gas station thermometer sign; and raises the temperature a few degrees.
Fuzzbox Piranha is holding rehearsal again. 3 guys who play places like Rock Hall, Taylor’s Island, Kent Island, Fenwick Island, Cambridge and Chestertown. 3 Garage Band Junkies who play where Blue Herons glide inches above a marshy waterway…who bash out three chord wonders on waterside docks. Places like Outriggers in Fenwick, Ponzetti’s in Ocean City, Chatty’s Lounge in Chincoteague, The Harbor Shack in Rock Hall…
As spicy as a newly opened can of Old Bay, but as intoxicating as the coldest brew on the hottest beach…there is a new breed of water dwellers to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean. Proudly indigenous to the Del-Mar-VA Peninsular…Fuzzbox Piranha! What bait are you using?
